Just
a bit of information to let you know what we have done in past years and some of the
events in which we hope to participate in the coming year.
For
the past two years, the affiliates of the PB-TC, AFL-CIO participated in the
Walk to Cure Diabetes at both of the events in
Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. We had a great turnout in 1998 and raised
over $10,000! In 1999 it was held during the spring holidays and limited our
membership participation to some extent, but we still had nearly 40 people walk and raised
over $4,000. MARK YOUR CALENDAR--MARCH 25 in Boca Raton and
APRIL1 in West Palm Beach! We are now actively
working on the Juvenile Diabetes campaign We need walkers, sponsors, and motivators.
You can email me if your interested
in helping out or call me at (561) 375-6678
When
the fires swept through St. Lucie County, we made a contribution to the St. Lucie Plant Fire Relief Fund with the monies
going directly to those that needed assistance the most.
Nearly
100 PB-TC AFL-CIO delegates participated in Christmas in
April of the Palm Beaches. Repairs ranged from picking up litter in
the yards and landscaping to tearing out walls and replacing and painting drywall, tearing
out kitchens and bathrooms and redoing all the plumbing and electrical. The
Carpenters replaced windows and rotted wood. A roof was replaced, laundry was done
and a little of everything else you can imagine OR for that matter, can't imagine.
This is a project that takes place every year in April to refurbish neighborhoods.
The shower sure felt good at the end of the day!
In
December we collected food, toys and money for Big
Brother and Big Sisters Holiday Party - it was a roaring success! If
you could have seen those kids' faces . . .it would have made your day.
One of
the most critical Community Emergency we had
was to a couple in a critical medical situation. It was during last summer when the
temperatures were consistently in the upper 90's. This couple needed assistance to
"repair" an air conditioner. Upon investigation, we found that the air
conditioner was beyond repair and with donated labor and a check from the PB-TC AFL-CIO,
we were able to make their mobile home livable. The lady had gone to the hospital on
several occasions due to dehydration and was able to return home to an air conditioned
bedroom. This couple have multiple health issues that are life threatening and our
intervention truly made a difference in their quality of life.
We
have sponsored in small ways several other worthy causes. We would love to have you
join us. We don't have a large treasure chest to draw from, and that is not our
goal, but we do need to raise funds on occasion so that we can help our members and
members of community when the need arises. If you have any suggestions for
fundraisers or can participate in anyway . . let us know! Donations are gratefully
accepted to PB-TC AFL-CIO COMMUNITY SERVICES. |
