Dear AFL-CIO Affiliates:

First of All I would like to Thank You for all you have done during 2001. The following projects are just a few of the ways that Union Members have helped to improve lives in Palm Beach County:

Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge--planted cypress trees to improve the environment for our children’s future

Hands-On cleaning up Lake Osborne--cooking and serving deep-fried turkeys and all of the extras to the volunteers that participated that day.

We walked to raise $$$ to find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes and participated in Dad’s Day.

We collected food for the hungry on several occasions--National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive, Thanksgiving, IBEW #728 Picnic

We reached out to our brothers and sisters in New York City, Washington, D. C. and Pennsylvania in their time of crisis during 9-11. We helped with our hands, our dollars and our blood. We continue to assist.

We attended a solidarity service here in Palm Beach County co-sponsored by many organizations including the Palm Beach-Treasure Coast AFL-CIO and United Way of Palm Beach County to come together as a community in support of our country’s resolve and support of those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001.

Adopt-A-Family: We adopted five families for the holidays and provided them with “the most wanted gift for the children”, food for a terrific holiday meal and more, clothing for school and a jacket for each child. This holiday season was especially touching since all of our families had been touched by terminal illnesses.

Many of you participated in a workplace campaign to raise money for the United Way of Palm Beach County, it’s agencies and designated charities that you chose to support here in our community.

For all of these reasons and much, much more, I want to thank you all for everything that you have done to improve lives on the Palm Beach-Treasure Coast.

And that is not all!

Many of our members have been trained to deliver shelter supplies in case of emergency throughout Palm Beach County to American Red Cross shelters. If you would like to be part of this group, please call 375-6678 and sign-up for the next training. It takes about four hours to be certified. If you can haul a camper or a boat, you can haul a shelter trailer. We need a large group to be trained so that if and when the need arises, we will have a pool to draw from. If you are unable to help one time, you may be available the next.

The Palm Beach County Airboat and Halftrack Conservation Club, President John Creasman, IBEW 728 Organizer, has signed a memorandum of understanding to do disaster assessment for the American Red Cross. Their club has the equipment and manpower in place to assist in areas that may be inaccessible to other vehicles in time of disaster.

Our featured local union is - IATSE # 500

The members of IATSE #500, formerly  IATSE #623, donated 25% of their pay for one day to begin a Union Fund at the United Way of Palm Beach County to help members of our community in time of need after September 11, 2001. They challenged other Local Unions to do the same. Thank you to the members of IATSE #500!!!
